Once again, Ilocos Norte National High School (INNHS) hit the headlines when Mrs. Mariecon G. Ramirez, newly appointed head teacher of the English Department, was proclaimed by Mr. Joseph Mussomeli, Charge' d'Affaires, Embassy of the United States of America, as the Thomasite Legacy International Visitor for 2006. This award gives Ramirez the chance to travel to the United States to participate in the month-long International Visitor Leadership Program, scheduled to begin in Washington, D. C. on April 17, 2006. The program is sully funded by the US Government.
Ramirez, 2004 Metrobank Outstanding Teacher of the Philippines, expressed astonishment for having been chosen as a recipient of what she considers as one of the highest awards to be given to a teacher.
"This came as a wonderful surprise. I am truly grateful and honored!"
Ramirez was chosen from among the ten 2004 Metrobank awardees to carry the name Thomasite which was used to refer to the American educators who traveled to the Philippines in 1901 to establish a public school system. These teachers made their journey on board the U.S. Army Transport "Thomas", hence the name Thomasites.
