Getting To Know Smart Schools
As the digital world rapidly changes and business paradigms evolve, we face greater challenges and are left with no option other than to embrace this novel culture or be rendered obsolete. Clearly it is no longer suffices to be educated on the so-called 3 R's - reading, 'riting and 'rithmetic. Functional basic literacy should now include computer competency and English proficiency for all - including those whose access and opportunities are hampered by distance, meager resources and dated communications infrastructure. Falling short would paralyze our efforts in a viciously competitive arena where boundaries of time and space have been virtually erased by technology - specifically, the internet. While this technology has the potential to equalize access to information across classes, paradoxically it can selectively delimit those who are financially challenged and further widen the gap. The latter scenario is a pity considering that the costs have decreased while connection speed has increased.
Knowledge is empowering and the internet as a tool puts us abreast with the latest information, trends and technologies wherever we are. With systematic search, we find that content on a spectrum of topics is not only adequate but ample and comprehensive since most reputable universities, other educational institutions, libraries and teacher groups have put their works online and oftentimes for free. There is very little you cannot find on the net - if you try hard enough.
As an educator it becomes our mission and responsibility to expose our students to the potentials of the internet as a knowledge source. We inoculate the next generation with the hope that the internet be responsibly used for good as a tool for business, pleasure, education and communication.
